The piezo cable uses a coaxial construction with piezoelectric polymer as the dielectric between core and outer braid. Squeezing or stretching generates charge proportional to the applied pressure. Continuous lengths are made to customer requirements; the standard product uses a 20AWG core with a polyethylene jacket.
Three characteristics of the coaxial structure
- Inherently shielded: the coaxial design makes the cable its own shield, usable in high-EMI environments.
- Cascadeable: standard coaxial joining extends it into a passive coaxial run, so monitoring length is not limited by a single piece.
- Rugged: it withstands heavy loads such as counting truck axles, and its linearity suits large-area continuous monitoring.
